Once you remember that there's more to the game than just rescuing apparently helpless settlers and you abandon what's his name and his band of merry minutemen, that's when the rest of the game really begins and you get an interesting story.
You'll spend at least 4 hours customizing your character, followed by at least the next 20 building your Sanctuary settlement and then the rest of the game rescuing other settlements.
